You could choose your omen Sunday morning when the door opened to the weigh-in station for the Marthas Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby at 8 a.m. sharp. The pessimists among us might have been chagrined that absolutely no one was in line yet to weigh in the first fish of the year. The optimists among us might have been relieved, however, just seconds later to see the sun pop out from above an overcast sky and provide a little warmth on a morning with a nip of fall in the air.Wheres all the fish, said derby president Ed Jerome after officially proclaiming the annual rite of fall on the Vineyard open for business.Ed Jerome (left) gets the crowd going as Roy Langley rings the opening bell. Mark Alan LovewellWelcome, Mr. Jerome added, addressing the small gathering, which included, according to one wag, more cameras than fish. Were very pleased to be here and thank you all for participating, Mr. Jerome said. Without you we couldnt be as successful a venture as it has been all these years. Were very proud to be part of one of the, maybe the biggest event on the Vineyard. The crowd didnt have to wait long for the first excitement of the day. Caitlyn Parkhurst of West Tisbury walked in with the first fish just five minutes after hall-of-fame weighmaster Roy Langley rang the opening bell. It was a 12.23 pound striper, the first fish she has ever weighed in the derby.I went out with Ned and John Casey on their boat, Ms. Parkhurst said. Started at midnight, got it at about 4 a.m. It was cold, but it was perfect. The water was like glass. It was a perfect night. Theres all sorts of fish out there. The first thing Ms. Parkhurst did was text her less ambitious fishing friends.John Custer weighs in Ron Domurat's 14.41-pound striper, caught from shore. Mark Alan LovewellI said why are you sleeping right now, I bet you wish you were out here with me, she said.Veteran angler Ron Domurat was next in the door, just a few minutes later, with a 14.41 pound striped bass caught from shore.Peter Shepardson was next with a 5.55 pound bluefish. He got two hits at once at his favorite fishing spot.I had a big bait on one of them, and he didnt get the hook, Mr. Shepardson said. The second one, he got it. I thought, come on, please be a bass because he was fighting well. He came in and I said thats not a bass. Oh, Ill take that. I had been up since 3 a.m. and the sun was just starting to come up.So Mr. Shepardson was first on the board for shore caught bluefish, a method he much prefers to fishing from a boat.Boats are cheating, he said with a laugh. The derby continues for the next five weeks. The top prizes are a Cape Codder custom fishing boat for the lucky winner from shore, and a Subaru vehicle for the winner from a boat.#bestrodsonearth #stcroixrods

Took some time to take the grandkids and their friend trout fishing. While using St. Croix Panfish Series Rods equipped with a Mepps Spinner, they proceeded to catch these huge dandys - fun for all! #stcroixrods

Fall bass fishing is going on along the shores of Door County. Fall just happens to be one of the best times to catch a trophy bass. Lots of different methods can hook you up to 6, 7, or even an 8 pounder. Tubes, Flukes, Drop Shots, and live baiting with big minnows all work. Using a medium action St. Croix Rod in 6 6 length is my choice. #stcroixrods #MercuryProTeam

Perch fishing really picking up in Sturgeon Bay. Live bait fishing working the best with both shinner minnows and nightcrawlers. I like using the St. Croix Panfish Series rods with 6# Trilene, using slipbobbers or a live bait rig with #6 Berkeley hooks. #stcroixrods

So grateful for good health, the beautiful state of Idaho, and St Croix Rods #stcroixrods #bestrodsonearth

The very last of my 42 fish from this weekend. Ive been working hard with all the techniques and rigs I will be using in Belgrade, Serbia, in early October. I feel strong, and I will continue to work hard on my fitness and endurance, to be as ready as possible for each of those 72 hours I will be fishing. Go Team USA!!! #Carping4Cancer #StCroixRods #BestRodsOnEarth

After several failed attempts over the years of making long distance runs on rumors we found ourselves face to face with the inshore ghost of the North East!! #cobia #stcroixrods

I can hear my grandfathers voice right now muttering the same story about a cobia him and his buddies landed in raritan bay back in the 60s. How they thought it was a shark at first making long powerful runs. Having to ask people back at the dock what they had just caught. This mystery fish to the north east had always intrigued me, hoping one day we would cross paths in my backyard with my buddies just like pop had told in his story. After several failed attempts over the years making long distance runs on rumors we found ourselves face to face with the inshore ghost. My buddy Tommy buckled down and went 1-2 pulling the hook boat side on another beast. #stcroixrods #takwaterman

I had a new net man tonight - the "Crappie Kid" - and he did a great job! He is also capable.of consuming an impressive amount of snacks in the boat... #StCroixRods #MercuryProTeam #offshoretackle

Ive Teamed up with Adam Vallee from Angling Algoma for this years Bassin for Bucks. Weve gotten into quite a few arguments...about things such as whether a certain weed is coontail or milfoil. How many types of coontail there are, and how many tournaments Gerald Swindle has won . Practice has been a grind but we are excited to finally set some hooks in the morning! We are in the first flight due in at 3:30 pm tomorrow! #bassinforbucks #StCroixRods
